Do whitening toothpastes really work?
Yes but no.
Let's tell you why.
Whitening pastes use two types of whitening elements, both abrasive (usually with a low level of RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasion): physical and chemical.
- The physical ones are those that contain small particles, from carbon to microplastics (the typical little squares) and that, due to friction, can erode the surface enamel. The issue of microplastics opens a great debate but clearly it is not the best solution at a health level, nor at a sustainability level.
- Chemicals are those that use small doses of hydrogen peroxide (<0.1%), bicarbonate or sodium lauryl sulfate. They're safe?
Yes, totally. The doses allowed in these pastes are totally safe.
But do whitening toothpastes really work?
As we said initially, yes but no. Whitening toothpastes can help maintain a healthy and white smile but they will not improve a yellowish smile since the concentration of these active ingredients is very low and the time that the paste is in contact with the teeth is very short.
Over the years and with bad habits of coffee, wine or tobacco, teeth turn yellow, recovering the initial whiteness will only be possible through specific whitening treatments.
Here a range of possibilities opens up. It doesn't depend on how much white you want to improve but rather where you start from.
If you have very yellow teeth, honestly, go directly to a professional dental center since you will need a specific treatment (with splints, LED, etc.) with a high concentration of active ingredients.
If you have slightly yellow teeth you can use splints, powders or whitening strips . In this case it is very important to choose good quality products, registered in European countries and with proven efficacy studies.
On the internet we can find a multitude of whitening products . The danger is that there is not enough control and many come from China and use peroxide as an ingredient, a chemical prohibited in concentrations greater than 0.1% in Europe due to its strong abrasive power. (Only professionals can use it).
Conclusion:
If you have very yellow teeth, go to a dentist. If what you want is to improve some tones you can use whitening products such as DR INUK whitening splints or strips . Always make sure they are made in Europe and with efficacy studies. And yes, you can use a whitening paste to maintain the whiteness after performing the whitening treatment.
